| Established in December, 1990, Felines & Friends is a
non-profit organization, dedicated to the continuing welfare of cats (and the occasional
dog or rabbit). We are comprised of a core group of dedicated volunteers who constantly
strive to make the world a better place for our four-legged friends. We perform a variety
of functions. We, ourselves, rescue in our own neighborhoods. We help others to rescue,
spay and neuter, and ultimately find homes for the strays in their work or home
environments. We spend many hours counseling and educating the public on the intricacies
of cat behavior, medical conditions and proper placement. We spend a great deal of time
locating donations of food, litter and, of course, money, in order to meet our
obligations. When there isn’t enough money in our treasury, we dig deep into our own
pockets to purchase needed supplies and medicines. Many of us work extra jobs so as to be
able to continue to rescue. We provide food and litter to our foster homes. We arrange adoptions, based on the careful screening of each adoptive parent to make the best possible match. We deliver each animal to its new home, to be as certain as possible that they are going to remain safe and happy with their new family. *The main difference between Felines & Friends and most rescue foundations is that Felines & Friends hosts a substantial number of Feline Leukemia Positive and Feline Immunodeficiency Virus cats and kittens that will remain in our care for the rest of their lives. We euthanize only when we have exhausted all options and the quality of the animal’s life is so diminished that they can no longer enjoy their time on this earth. When a cat (or dog) comes into the Felines & Friends’ program, they have friends for life. We do not turn our back on an innocent animal simply because they are carrying a virus. We provide the best medical treatment for them, including weekly IV injections of ImmunoRegulin, which is an immune stimulant. They receive regiments of Interferon, another oral immune stimulant. They get full examinations at least three times a year to make sure the virus has not caused gingivitis. If it has, we have dentals performed to keep them in the best possible health. This is coupled with vitamins and herbs, all designed to regulate and stimulate the immune system. If an animal is not responding, we take them for acupuncture, which has proven, time and time again, to give them a new lease on life. Felines & Friends’ animals do not live in cages in a shelter. We feel that type of environment is too stressful and we provide foster homes until they are permanently adopted. In the case of our FelV+ and FIV+ kitties, they remain in foster care for life. Felines & Friends provides the foster parents with food (canned, when available) and a premium dry food. We provide litter and equipment, such as litter pans, dishes, beds, kennels, etc. We cover all medical costs on our foster cats. We try to make it as easy as possible for our foster parents to continue to provide happy homes — because they are the life’s blood of this organization. Without them, we could not function. We are hoping there will be a time when organizations, such as our, are no longer needed — when there are no more homeless animals. But, until that time comes, we will continue to do our small part in helping make the world a better place for our furry friends. |
