A lot has happened since the last time we've had a chance to update our "Monthly Meow!"
  • November, 2003:

  • MONDAY’s UPDATE on the Spay/Neuter Project:  Unfortunately, we were unable to trap anyone for transport on Monday morning.  The cats that kept going in the traps were ones that had already visited the doctor!  They must have liked spending the night in a nice, warm clinic!  We’ll try again tomorrow.  Keep your fingers crossed!

  • FRIDAY - Well, Felines & Friends Spay/Neuter project in Hollywood is doing great.  Again, with Rick’s help, we transported another female and another male to Shenandoah Animal Hospital for their “operations”!  And again, we were lucky – the female was not yet pregnant… but she was approximately 5 months old and a prime candidate!

  • November, 2003 - It was a harrowing and stressful four days for one Felines & Friends foster family.  A very special little boy, Timothy, who had originally been a “foster,” but now has become part of the family, slipped out the front door on his 83-year-old “Dad.”  He literally disappeared within an hour!  Felines & Friends searched the neighborhood, calling his name; we put up flyers on light poles and telephone poles and put a “Lost” ad in the Los Angeles Times.  We contacted the West Los Angeles Shelter to tell them to be on the lookout and then, on Sunday, made up individual flyers and distributed them, on foot, to every mailbox within a 5 block radius.  Sunday evening the call came, “We have Timmy!”  It seems he was found on Saturday (who knows where he was from Wednesday night till then), when he ran into a house when the front door was opened!  He was two blocks away, and when they put him back out (the gentleman has cat allergies), he took over their cat’s doghouse!  They were kind enough to feed him and realized that he must belong to someone!  They were ecstatic when they found the flyer in their mailbox.  The reunion was dramatic!  Felines & Friends picked up “Dad” and took him to the location.  The lady of the house opened the back bedroom door (they brought him back in when they read the flyer), and when Dad called, “Timmy!” that little guy leapt into his Dad’s arms!  He spent his first night back home under the covers in bed with Dad!  He’s going for micro-chipping this Friday – but we don’t think Timmy will ever again be so adventurous!

  • October, 2003 - Felines & Friends took in two FIV+ kitties – a beautiful female, white with black splotches, about two years old – and we’re calling her Felice.  She is so sweet and loving.  Skippy is a buff black kitty, (he WAS all male!), with a lovely personality.  Both these cats came to us via one of our board members, who had heard they were at a veterinary hospital and were about to be euthanized.  Both these cats are very healthy – however, both of them needed dentals (a usual occurrence on FIV+ cats).  They’re now in foster care and adding lots of affection to the dynamics of the household!

  • November, 2003 - Felines & Friends has begun a spay/neuter project in the Hollywood area.  With the help of one of our key people, Rick, we have thus far – this week – trapped 4 of the cats.  They have been spayed and neutered, had their shots (rabies included, as they are being re-released), dentals (their teeth were in terrible shape), and have been wormed and de-fleaed.  There is a family who will continue to feed the colony and notify us if any new residents show up.  With Rick making trips to and from the vet through next week, we hope to have this project wrapped up shortly after Thanksgiving.   Felines & Friends was lucky enough to have wonderful benefactors present us with a donation to cover the veterinary costs of this undertaking.  Thank you, Claire and Bob!

  • Baskerville and Spike who were staying in our "suite" in the cat waiting room at Shenandoah) were adopted to a wonderful home.  We definitely wanted then to go together, as the brothers were quite bonded.  A client at Shenandoah, who had just lost her little one, just fell in love with them.

  • Jewels, a lovely 7 month old tortishell, who appeared at our Borders adoption, was adopted by a lovely woman who had met her that weekend, but had also just lost her kitty and was still grieving.  When she was ready to open her heart again, she couldn't forget Jewels!
  • Ranger, a beautiful red tabby, who had been abandoned at Shenandoah, moved to a foster home.  Obviously, an abused kitty, he's been doing well - we can, at least, make eye contact without his being so terrified that he loses control of his bowels... He'll be moving to another foster home very soon, and he'll have all the time he needs to begin to trust people again.  He's a wonderful little guy, and he'll get plenty of love and positive assurance and, eventually, he'll be ready for adoption.
  • We rescued a chocolate Lab, who crossed LaCienega Boulevard directly in front of our President's car.  At 92 pounds, he was a big lug - and just as sweet and affectionate.  We held him for two weeks, while we advertised for an owner - and the very day he was available, he was adopted to a fabulous family... who is making their backyard into a doggie wonderland.  We think Rocky will especially love the pond!
  • Teddy, who also spent some time in our "suite" at Shenandoah, was adopted.  He's Seneca's new brother!  Unfortunately, Seneca lost her new senior citizen stepbrother at the age of 17, and her dad knew she'd be lonely.  He thought Teddy, who is slightly introverted, might help to balance out the busy, busy Seneca.  At last report, it WASN'T working!  Seneca is as outgoing as ever - and Teddy is beginning to copy all her antics!
  • Sassy, Teddy's brother, was also adopted.  A super gentleman, who had adopted from us many years ago, lost the older kitty from kidney problems and hyperthyroidism.  He adopted a year-old red tabby from his present veterinarian, Dr.
Valentine, and was looking for a companion for him.  Sassy, a beautiful little tortishell, just fit the bill!
  • We got a call from a former foster parent, who discovered a very friendly red classic tabby hanging around her block.  "Ruben" was brought into Shenandoah Animal Clinic, covered with fleas, sporting a very swollen eye and an upper respiratory infection.  With just a few days of medication, his eye is so much better.  He's moved to a foster home and is loving every minute of being out of the rain!  He's about two years old and just the sweetest guy...
  • Mr. Gray (now dubbed "Grady"), an affectionate year-old male, was brought into Shenandoah with an abscess on his shoulder.   Surgery and medication have done wonders for him - and he is so happy to be warm, fed and dry!  He's a gray and white shorthair and is looking for someone to love him for life.  He's moved into the foster home with Ruben and they're becoming good friends.
  • Dutchess, a black shorthair female spay, about one-year old, who was rescued from El Segundo, was just adopted by a lady who is going to spoil her for life!  Soon after she was delivered to her new home, we heard that she was "the perfect little cat"  and she's been renamed "Kelly."
  • Sophie and Ballard, both four-foot declaws, were given up by their owner because of allergies.  Right after they came into Shenandoah, we were lucky enough to have received a referral from another group, and they are being adopted by a doctor who lives in Woodland Hills.  Sophie is a little "chunky," but with a three-story house to explore, we're sure she'll take off a pound or two!
  • Jeremy, a 2-year old Golden/Collie mix, has found a wonderful man to move in with.  It sounds like Jeremy's adjusting rather well - we're told he spends most of his time "kissing" his new dad!  Jeremy's dad was so excited to have Jeremy become a part of his family that he generously DONATED a digital camera to Felines & Friends.  That will help us to improve our site and keep it up-to-date!
